Think only the government wastes money? Think again.

Wasteful spending

Governments are not the only organizations that routinely waste money. Guess what? So is your business. Here’s why.

Last week the Canadian federal government announced that it found over 8000 unused lines that it was paying for. No one is ever surprised to hear about governments wasting money, but all too often they never take a look in the mirror either. On a similar audit that we just completed on a 400+ employee law firm, we uncovered 113 unused land lines, 78 unused mobile devices, and an entire office that had a fiber line running to it, despite the fact that they vacated the office 6 months prior. More on this in a bit, but there is one theme that we come across frequently when sitting down with our clients.

They haven’t a clue about any of this.

One thing that often catches small companies by surprise is that even with as few as 20 employees, their telecom costs are completely out of control. On average we see companies have a ratio of 25% or more in unused lines, and then an additional 15-20% in billing errors or non-optimized rate plans.

Compared to the government, who has hundreds of thousands of lines, finding 8000 is a drop in the bucket compared to what is likely happening inside your company.

But why is this the case? Shouldn’t the smaller the company the easier it is to manage? The reason for this is that small companies have often grown rapidly and have never planned their telecom spend properly. They’ve added new lines and services as they’ve grown and they have people on wildly different plans which makes it impossible to control costs. There is no “company plan” with a common feature inclusion and this makes managing it a nightmare.

But do you know for sure?
